Looking at the stark color differences the day after rain turns to snow.  The bright white against the deep green, you see the big outcomes from small changes in elevation.  And our "Small decisions" can have equally large impact in our lives. There are tides in the affairs of our lives that can lead on to victory... Be mindful of every breath you take, the decisions you choose, and do the 5 Tools every day.  The small investment of time yields a huge crop of  joy, clear decisions, health [the ultimate goal!] and even income.

Trauma caused by hearing truth from your doctor; Is this a real problem?

Have you heard?  A new type of trauma, caused by medical doctors who tell you the truth about likely effects of your disease, and the pros and cons of various treatment plans.

Truth has now become the enemy.

I thought I must have misheard it, so I listened to the lecture twice.  Timothy Trujillo, in an AHA class on hypnosis for the cure of immune system problems, actually denounced doctors who show you pictures of your hair falling out as a result of chemotherapy, saying that the reason your hair falls out is that doctors tell you that it will.  If doctors lie to you and tell you that the treatment will be completely symptom-free, then your hair won’t fall out, you won’t have any nausea, the cancer will magically and entirely disappear and you’ll all live happily ever after in Neverland.

Mr. Trujillo is not alone.  The alternative health field is riddled with this nonsense – and then we wonder why licensed and competent healers despise us!  And why doctors won't give us a straight answer to a simple question!

In case you were wondering, I am a practitioner of hypnotherapy and the mind’s ability to change water into wine is truly, truly remarkable.  However – and please pay attention to this! – that truth does NOT mean that all the laws of biology and physics can be changed by wanted it to be so.  My beloved, but sadly deluded, sister kept saying “It’s nothing, it’s just fibroids,” believing that saying it over and over again would make it true.  The cancer that was growing inside her killed her, because she refused to consider that repeating a sentence a thousand times does not make it a fact.

Chemotherapy kills cancer cells by targeting cells that are dividing rapidly.  That’s why you get gut problems and your hair falls out.  It also targets your cancer, you doofus.  If your hair follicles aren’t impacted, neither will the cancer cells be.  [Immunotherapy is very different, a targeted attack on just the cancer.  But it does not yet work on every kind of cancer, in every human body.  You need Star Trek and Dr. Mc Coy’s Sickbay to get that level of miracle.]

The real medical communication problem is not the doctors who give you complete and accurate information about potential illnesses and potential cures and treatment – it’s the doctors who DON’T.  The doctors who have been too traumatized by terrified patients and their families, who are horrified that you actually talked about death or gave someone an accurate and responsible answer to “how long am I likely to live?”

Another sister of my heart is 3 months into an estimate of 6 months to live and the honesty of her doctor gave her the ability to make honest and accurate plans for herself.  She took a cruise with her grand-daughters during which everyone could speak from the heart, with no one so terrified of loss that they ran away from the chance to speak their love. She did that, instead of the perennial "I can't afford it, maybe later," because she knows that she doesn't have "later" as an excuse any more. She is spending quality time with her husband and her friends and her beloved dog.  And me, at the 9,000-mile-distance that we have managed to surmount in spirit as well as occasionally in body over the course of 35 wonderful years.

With truth, you can take back real power, the power to choose how to spend the time you have, and let go of the phony power that denial gives you.  And I put all the “it’s NOT going to happen to ME!” that Trujillo et al. promotes into the denial category.  Try like hell to avoid as much pain as possible.  Try like hell to stretch 6 months to 6+.  But accept that it might be 5, and the pain can’t be avoided, and your best-loved goals and dreams will not be achieved.

You really want truth too, my friends, no matter how seductive denial is and no matter how terrified out of your mind you are.  Truth is the only possession you truly have, the only real power no one can take from you.  Truth is the only place where you are truly free.

Make a vow to yourself, today, renewable every day for the rest of your life:  In small issues as well as life and death, I choose Truth, no matter how messy or frightening or not-what-I-want-to-hear.  I choose Truth.  I have the courage to face Truth, and I will use Truth to lead me in all my decisions.

[This doesn’t preclude spirituality….. don’t raise that red herring, darlings]
And remember that the reason why I want you to choose Truth, is that Truth is also the only reliable road to lifetime joy.  The exact mechanism of that road is the subject for another day.  For now, just acclimate yourself to your own courageous soul, and let that butterfly called Truth get used to alighting gently on your shoulder and whispering into your ear.  Truth is the sweetest music of all.

Read the We’re #1 chapter in my new memoir Red State, Blue Heart to understand how denial kills thousands of black women in the USA every year, who should and would live, if they stopped believing that they can dodge reality by refusing to Claim it.  Can’t blame this one on racism, friends!  Our refusal to insist that we live our lives in accordance with facts has to end… before it ends more and more of us.

The REAL Reason You Are Nervous About Public Speaking. And Maybe Keep Missing Goals as Well? Check this out....

I want to bring my interview with Shirley Dalton to your attention, and for a specific reason. Sure, I mention my new class for entrepreneurs and her fun products, but the REAL reason I want you to listen is because I made a colossal mistake, on the air, and didn't even realize it until after I listened to the recording. It's what I call a Somebody Please Shoot Me (SPSM) moment. We all have them. I am an experienced speaker and have been healing and transforming lives with these specific tools for about 17 years. Yet I goofed and didn't even hear myself do it until it was too late to fix.

And I was totally OK after about 10 seconds of SPSM. I laughed and called my husband who said, "Oh, dear." He grew up in the south. "Oh, no," is as harsh as the language gets.

And this fear of a SPSM moment is 100% why so many people fear public speaking, and so many people want to write books or become rutabaga farmers or train for a marathon - and don't do it. At a very deep level of our unconscious minds, there is a collection of neurons that remember shame and humiliation from childhood and start screaming NOOOOOOOO.

But here's the key: you don't have to feel shame and humiliation. Those feelings arise naturally from thoughts. If you do deep hypnotherapy on the thoughts and eliminate the conclusions that you've been humiliated, that no one will respect you, that you are (fill in the blanks) , then the feelings only come up for 10 seconds - and then you genuinely laugh. Spanish proverb We make plans; God laughs. So I laugh along.

My recommendation for today: journal about what you're afraid of. Dig deep into those barriers. Admit that the barriers exist. Start the process with memories that sting, breathe into them and say, "So what? So, idiots laughed at me. I made a mistake. It happens. Life is good." Keep breathing and reciting until the feelings subside. [Then sign up for a 30 day program with me, and dig that stuff out by the roots and never be bothered by it ever again - and watch career, business, book, exercise or rutabagas soar into the sky.]

And I'm guessing you'd rather know what my SPSM moment was? So you can listen for it? Well, it was a humdinger. I said the green chakra is the throat. It is, and always will be, your heart - of course. Stress does amazing things to brain function..... [See my new book 101 Stress Busters for all the fun ways to reduce stress so you have fewer SPSM moments.]

These moments WILL happen. When they do, laugh. And then let go.

Being Real

Over a century ago, this American essayist wrote a profound truth about human nature: we don't want to hear the truth about ourselves. We respond to truth from others like we respond to rattlesnakes. We don't tell ourselves the truth. And our conscious mind is so 100% focused on protecting our social selves from any kind of negativity that we suppress all that we could know. But all that energy spent fending off deep self-knowledge, if it were harnessed to the wagon of our dreams? My god, we could rocket to the stars, couldn't we? So much peace of mind, just waiting to be harnessed. Such creativity - blazing fountains of creativity! - if only we could reclaim all that blighting energy.

What are we so afraid of? The scorn of the "world" when we show/admit that we aren't perfect people, in one or all of our roles (entrepreneur/career, parenting, spouse, citizen, Christian/Jew/Muslim/other - every single label that matters to us - and we all have labels that matter to us!) The disappointment of loved ones who see the real us for the first time. [They preferred to put us on a pedestal, so they didn't have to do the hard work of being real, either.

Take one small step nearly every day. Be real in one moment with one person. Eventually you'll be able to fire your social self's internal "safety net" but don't expect to do that today. For today, one person, one moment. As the Buddha said, you fill the pitcher drop by drop.

Soar With Dragons to Genuine Joy (part 2)

In the first part of this exploration, I recommended learning new things, exploring creating things and slowing down to the point where you can actually experience the world you live in.  Today I want to look at some examples of joy that came to me like a bolt from the heavens - unplanned, unexpected and amazing.

It was almost two decades ago, and a Russian colleague was visiting Silicon Valley to share best practices on the use of technology in education.  At that time, I was director of a university extension program in network management. [Too true.  Before I saw the light and switched to healing minds and bodies, I used to teach network engineering.  My first published book, by Prentice-Hall was titled Networking and Data Communications and was the first readable tutorial on LAN technology ever published.  For your homework assignment, research how long ago that was and DON’T TELL ANYONE!]

I was in a major-league funk, not whining about anything, just much more subdued than usual, in a serious crisis of confidence.  He noticed that I wasn’t my usual sunny self, nagged me to tell him why, and I gave him the 20-words-or-less version of What Wasn’t Working in My Life.  I’ll never forget his words, because they not only brought me out of my funk, they have sustained me for two decades.  He said, “Remember: you are the beloved child of God.”

Not so extraordinary, you say?  Well, consider this: I don’t think he believes in God.  I know I don’t and never did.  While I’m a very spiritual and religious person, my faith doesn’t have a First Cause (God/Creator being).  The universe follows laws and arose however Stephen Hawking and his colleagues say it does and did.  We Buddhists don’t care.  Religion is about ethics, conscience, love, honor, transcendence and the meaning of our human lives, all the things that chemistry and physics and biology can’t create experiments to study.  But what my colleague was saying wasn’t about the simplistic definition of God as creator being.  He meant God as a word that equals “the spirit of love that animates the universe,” which the Upanishads, humanity oldest literature, says is the axis that all matter revolves around.  Every faith I’ve ever studied sees that three-letter word as denoting a concept or an energy, not an actual being.  What he was really saying was “Victoria, it’s just a trough in the overall arc of a good person’s life.  The universe still rotates on an axis of pure love.  See that.  Don’t forget it.”

Seeing to the heart of what he was communicating transformed my whole conceptualization of what my life was about and what my response to the latest life-insult [a serious health issue] should be.

Fast forward to two years ago, when I was spending four days above the Arctic Circle in mid-winter, and it was every bit as icy cold from 10PM to 5AM as you are envisioning – times twelve.  The auroras were glorious; I could feel those magnetic fields resonating in my soul.  They danced their sparkling dance across a sky blazing with starlight.

I noticed a Japanese woman who was traveling alone and reached out to try to share the experience, but her English was poor and I wasn’t pronouncing my 7 words of Japanese correctly.  So I held her hand, shared some reiki, and crocheted her a scarf, with reiki symbols in them, so they would continue to create a channel through me to her even after we all went on our ways.  So few words.  But the channel was profound.  We stayed in touch, she continued to study English.  Today, she is marvelously fluent, I’ve learned to pronounce better and we are doing wonderful spiritual healing work together. [If you can read Japanese, find Wami Amami online and sign up to work with her.]

We can find joy, we can find wisdom and we can find deep connection with unfamiliar words and with no words at all.  Joy can flow down like a mighty river into our unsuspecting souls, if we open ourselves to it.  I hope you will.
