Keeping it Weird: How To Be Genuine AND Authentic

I treasure the times when I get to see myself through someone else's eyes, as a "reality check" so I know that my view of myself isn't the only way to look at it.

Recently, had a friend house sit for me, take care of the animals, etc. So I toured her through the house... here are the pots and pans, here's the pantry, the towels are in the bathroom, etc. When she's seen the whole house, she does a puzzled 360 and asks, "Where do you have your TV?"

The look on her face when I divulged that I don't have a TV was priceless. Really thought she was going to have a heart attack.

"What do you do in the evening?"

"Silent prayer."

But I relented after a heartbeat and told her about wifi, which gets you YouTube (she could visit my dozens of videos at humanbio4everyone, as well as TV shows, music videos, comedy, news), and I introduced her to coursera.org, and my collection of audio books, music CDs, and books.

We are all peculiar in our own ways, and I DO know that I am weirder than most. I'm a spiritual and transformational (science-based) healer, so you have to figure I am going to be a few degrees off true north, but I never really realize how weird I truly am until I encounter one of these conversations.

Wait until you hear how I celebrate Thanksgiving and New Year's Eve..... nah, that's a story for another day.

What matters is that you allow yourself to be seen as you truly are, with your values that come from your heart, that you love and are proud of yourself for those values. When someone sees who you are truly are, in all the glory of your soul, you have let them into the mystery that is you, and that is a precious gift.

If they gulp, look terrified and aver that yeah, they could learn how to read books again, that is a true friend. [When it came down to it, she gorged on audio books from the Great Courses and fell in love with my sweet dwarf rabbit.. and my extra-size tub and lavender epsom salts.]

Living inside my own head, I think my life choices and values are Normal. And that's how I've become who I am today - watching and experiencing all the wild and wonderful weirdness that other people showed me, some of which sparked answering chords in the music of MY heart.

So many Americans hate exercise and won't do it. Not MY clients! Light in the Darkness

One of the great joys of December is all the holidays of Light. The nights are becoming longer and longer. There is so much darkness in our days - and then the businesses and the homes start to twinkle like stars in the sky come down to Earth to bless us with what we most need. It's pretty, yes. But it is even more a symbol. Light in the darkness is Hope personified. The only real defeat in life is Despair.

Here is my little town of Ashland, Oregon, in the mountains just 14 miles from the California border, offering up Hope and Joy to the darkness....

2 key concerns and 4 big solutions for perimenopause and menopause



When you are 40-50 years old and female, you are in perimenopause, the time when major changes are happening all over your body, on the road to the major landmark of menopause. Women have to accomplish in approximately 18 months what a man gets to spread out over a decade. [The male version is andropause, when a man's internal biochemistry shifts from reproduction to conservation of resources for aging.]
Problem #1:  Failing Thyroid
One of the most common problems is a failing thyroid. While many changes of perimenopause and menopause are normal parts of life, including hot flashes, a failing thyroid needs intervention,
What does thyroid hormone do?
Thyroid hormone must be absorbed by every cell in your body. It is the metabolism hormone. Without it, you will experience more and more lethargy, you will constantly feel cold, you will gain more and more weight and (if the thyroid levels fall low enough), you will die. The ONLY way to deal with a thyroid that is failing to produce enough T4 (which is converted to the active hormone T3) is to supplement with genuine T4 or T3. Syntheroid doesn't work well for a lot of people but it's cheap so you'll probably start with that one. Armour is "natural" in that it is taken from the bodies of pigs who were killed for meat, and that natural moniker appeals to some of us. The doses aren't going to be precisely equal because every pig is different, which is why your doc may not love it; it's harder to feel good if you're not getting the same dose every day, so if your ideology pushes you to Armour (which I love, by the way), you understand that her concern is your health, not anything sinister, please. You can also take T3 directly, whose brand name is Cytomel.
Your body needs you to take T4 or T3 every day, so your cells can have the chemical it needs to run your metabolism. There are NO herbs, and iodine supplements are included here, that can substitute for thyroid hormone. If you genuinely need it, do please take it. An iodine supplement can only help if you are not producing hormone due to an actual iodine deficiency and if you are eating a healthy diet, you don't have one. You can harm yourself very severely if you overdose on iodine, so don't muck around with this. Do what your body needs.

Another cure: get serious about exercise.  Do it; stop making excuses.  I KNOW that when you aren't sleeping enough, etc. you get frantic about What Isn't Getting Done.  This increases your stress.  There is a solution, it is actually the ONLY solution, and it will work.
Here's the solution: cut your to-do list in half.  I. AM. SERIOUS.  For the first two years that perimenopause starts and the 18 months of actual menopause you need to cut back your responsibilities sharply.  You have to.  You are the exquisite ancestral result of 10,000 generations of people who dealt with reality, not with what they wished was reality; those folks ended up dead and left the gene pool.  You have to have less worries and responsibilities.  Get a good night's sleep and hire a life coach like me and make it happen.  
This is a major biological transition and moderate exercise (energetic walking, treadmilling and spinning, yoga, weights work, classes, etc.) every single day will improve your hormonal balance every single day.  I know you hate this truth, but it is a truth, supported by reams of clinical evidence.  Moving enough to get a mild sweat going shifts your bouncing hormone levels onto a more even keel.  They need to trend downward slowly; you can deal with that.  It's when they are all over the place that your poor brain gets crazy and has you drenching sweat one minute and freezing the next and sleeping deeply and healthfully never  If you want the torment to stop, lace up your shoes and re-read/view/listen to the Moving Domain. 
Taking hormone supplements (even the natural, bioidentical, blah-blah stuff) ups your chances of breast cancer.  Think breast cancer will be less hassle than exercising every day?  By the time we hit 45, we're past the fantasy that devastating problems and illnesses only happen to other people.  Whatever it takes, make exercise and healthy eating your priority.
Eat more soy.  Soy metabolizes as a molecule that looks enough like estradiol (estrogen) that it connects to hormone receptors on cells and makes your body think it has more hormone than it really does.  So your peri- and menopause symptoms are less intense.  Japanese women have lower levels of reproductive cancers and easier menopause and a lot of the reason is soy in the diet.  Soy milk.  Edamame.  Tempeh.  Tofu that's flavored.  If all you've ever eaten is the boring while stuff, that's only for the hard-core.  Ordinary folks like me get the flavored stuff, yum.  Non-meat sausage, bacon and you-name-it can be made from tapioca and other healthy substances, but a lot of it is soy.  Enjoy!
Problem #2: Catastrophically dropping calorie requirements
This cause of slow and steady weight gain during the perimenopause and menopause years is a sharp drop in your metabolic rate.  You burn less calories just running basic processes.  You will have to cut 100-300 calories per day out of what you input by changing what you eat or eating less overall food per day.  You’ll be mildly hungry a lot of the time, because of the crazy hormones, and if you respond with eating, you will compound the problem. 
Good news: exercise dulls your appetite as well as revving up your metabolism for several hours.  The amount you burn working out is trivial compared to the benefit of boosting your metabolism.  Adding muscle – not bulk, remember; breathe! – adds to your metabolic rate because muscles burn up calories getting ready to leap into action, whereas fat just sits there.
The good news about this 2nd issue is that you don’t need a manufactured hormone to save you.  You can be the heroine of this story all on your own.

Healthy Female Body Image - and Healthy Female Bodies

Harriet Brown (Missed Images, October 2016, Prevention Magazine, prevention.com) fell into a common error:  she discovered that she’d been doing something to harm her kids and decided the only solution was to go to the opposite extreme.  Specifically, she’s spent years criticizing her body in truly unhealthy ways, in front of her kids.  She’s stopped that.  Good.  

Now listen to her list of what the rest of the world has to do: no mentioning of weight, calories or carbs, ever.  Those of us who are determined to stop being victims of the nationwide-epidemic of overweight – a very serious health hazard, personally and for our country! – can’t even mention our weight loss and strengthening victories, much less celebrate them!   If we congratulate each other on vegetable-eating and subsequent weight loss, talk about recipes, talk about yoga and water aerobics, about losing fat and putting on muscle, then we are “trash-talking” our bodies.  We cannot discuss these health facts and victories with our kids or with each other – ever, in any way.   

Any factual information about the health hazards of obesity are equivalent to body-hating.  What other pressing problems could we solve if we stop thinking about improving our health by reducing our fat, the author asks?  More important than a strong, healthy body and the self-care that precludes stress-eating?  Health is the #1 most pressing issue in your or anyone else’s life.  What does it profit a woman to save the rainforest and die young herself of preventable disease?  We women have been modelling THAT kind of devaluing ourselves for way too long.

The cure for trash-talking isn’t a gag rule.  We can't switch from shaming each other for our unhealthy bodies to trying to make ourselves feel better by shaming those who are trying to improve their health - or ours.  

What this author should have said is that she used to refer to herself in self-loathing terms, now she is self-loving.  She now tells herself that she completely loves and respects her physical self AND she is charting exercise, calories, carbs and meditation every day so she can nourish and care for her physical self in the best possible way, during the making-muscles, losing fat transformation period and on into maintenance of her healthy, vibrant body.  

Insisting that all body types are equally worthy of LOVE is right on.  Saying that all body shapes are equally HEALTHY is utter nonsense.

Thinking I Understand You.....

Thinking I understand you .... and I really, truly don't.

This quote is so important to keep in mind.


When I am most inclined to shoot off my mouth, full of certainty that I know what The Truth is - especially if I think I know the answer AND it's really quite simple, if you only...... - this quote flashes into my mind and I shut my mouth.  

How hard it is for this language-loving species of ours to get through to ourselves that sometimes the finest wordsmith on earth really, truly cannot convey an experience. You'll never know what war is like from watching movies, reading books or even listening to people.  You'll never know what a violent physical assault, especially a sexual assault, does to the depths of a soul from listening, reading or watching movies. [And watching movies can cause PTSD in empathetic people, so please don't.]  You'll also never know about parenting from having your nieces for a weekend or from reading, listening or watching.

You'll never know about the awe, the soul-shattering, body-shaking or very quiet transcendence that comes at the top of tall mountains that you climbed yourself.  You can't visit a forest or a waterfall in a video.  You can't imagine the near-extinction event our ancestors survived 60,000 years ago.

We call it humility.  Just an acknowledgement of the shouldn't-be-so-profound truth that we don't know everything, and we usually don't know better than the people who have had the experience.  It's just the human experience.  Until we actually have a Vulcan mind-meld, our experience-sharing ability will always be limited to what language can convey and some of the most important experiences are impossible to completely encapsulate in words.

WHY Do Women Keep Taking Early Retirement? Is it really as insane as it seems to financial analysts?


What’s wrong with women?  As usual, nothing at all that kicking sexist cultural norms in the nuts wouldn’t cure.

Today I read yet another online article on why one should not start taking Social Security benefits until full retirement age, and even age 70.  The author, as they generally do, especially decries the female penchant for retirement at age 62.  You’re read all the mathematically-based reasons to wait.  Let me point out some reasons why people are not stupid or ignorant for starting benefits early.

Argument #1:  You get a bigger paycheck in your 80s and 90s if you wait to start collecting in your 70th year.

Absolutely true.  You can look at your family tree and decide that you come from long-lived stock and you probably will live long and prosper.  However, do be aware that by doing that, you give up $20,000/year of income for 8 years.  In order to recoup that, you have to live to at least 83.  Will you?  Are you sure?  If you’re not sure, then game theory suggests that you are not stupid to go for the bird in the hand.  My sister comes of long-lived stock and she never retired.  She died at age 65 because, her DNA notwithstanding, she hated doctors and didn’t get a problem checked out, which ended up killing her.  She got $0 in benefits for her 40 years of hard labor.  Which brings us to….

Argument #2: Practically everyone will live to their 80s and 90s.

Actually, we won’t.  Half of us who reach 60 will die in our 60s and 70s.  That 60 is the new 40 rubbish conveniently forgets statistics.  Some of us develop serious health problems in our 50s and 60s.  Many women need to retire before full retirement age because of serious health problems.  And at least half of us will succumb to something before we hit 80.  So, no, age isn’t just a number.  Our bodies have a sell-by date.  If you are gifted with strong DNA, be grateful.  Don’t be arrogant.  Be grateful.  Be grateful every day.  If you feel compelled to give someone advice on how they could instantly solve their health problems with Positive Thinking, take a deep breath, and shut up.  Take another deep breath and continue shutting up.  Stay that way for the rest of your life.  Excellent.

Argument #3:  Women will live longer than men, so they should be super-diligent about not retiring until at least full-retirement age.  Why do they keep taking retirement at age 62?  They’re insane!

No, they’re not insane, they are conventional.  Men consistently look for wives who are on average 5-8 years younger than them.  And they expect their women to be moons to their planet, ready to accommodate what they are doing in their lives to what the Mister wants.  So when Himself retires, he will be 66 or 70 and his wife will be – how old now?  That’s right, 62 or younger.  By age 62, she has an impatient spouse who wants to buy an RV, travel, golf and expects his lifetime sidekick to be on his page, not someone who says “Sorry, dear, I have to wait to collect benefits – perhaps continue working – until age 66 to maximize my economic security when you are dead and buried.”  At a practical level, if you want to have some fun with the old geezer, who is likely to kick the bucket at a younger age than you, you’d better grab the gusto now.  And you need to retire now, so you can have two retirement checks to pay for the RV, the travel and the health care.

Which brings us to a REAL problem that these articles usually miss, and that is: whoever gets sick first, ends up using up most/all of the available cash on THEIR needs, leaving the surviving spouse destitute or close to it.  And guess who, statistically-speaking, dies first?  And who ends up in dire poverty?  THAT is a good reason to postpone retirement, ladies.  That comfortable block of retirement savings will go up in smoke when Himself gets sick.  He’ll demand it.  You’ll either lovingly allow it, or be too afraid to say “It’s time to let go, dear” when he wants another round of fruitless or low-probability treatment, and the rest of the family is just as terrified to let go as he is – and who won’t be subsidizing your grocery bill when it’s all over and you’re beyond broke.  

This is the only really compelling argument for living on his Social Security plus pension only, and leaving your spouse or personal-income entitlement untapped until your own full retirement age.  A couple fewer trips for him, equals a better chance of staying out of really dire poverty for you.  Someone who truly loves you won’t put his pleasure ahead of your safety. 


Human behavior, as in the case of women who take early retirement, is usually not irrational at all, when looked at from the frame of reference of the person making the choices.
